Our Story

Urban Deer Control (UDC) is a conservation organization that was created to address critical and urgent wildlife, habitat, and environmental issues related to extreme overpopulation levels of whitetail deer presently occurring in the greater Washington DC metropolitan region and many other urban and suburban areas around the country.

In recent years the local deer population in these and other areas has exploded and now far surpasses the surrounding environmental habitat’s carrying capacity – or rather, its ability to adequately sustain both the overabundance of deer and other native wildlife species. This has resulted in a number of directly related issues and had a devastating impact on local environmental ecosystems and habitat as well as other native animals – in some cases, completely wiping out other indigenous wildlife species entirely.

Beyond the increasing damage to local habitats and ecosystems, the overabundance of deer has also negatively impacted many of the people living in these urban and suburban areas, giving rise to unnatural human-deer encounters and resulting in a growing number of health and safety issues. These issues include an alarming rise in the number of deer-automobile collisions that make our highways less safe and increasingly put drivers at risk while on the road, especially at night. They also include millions of dollars in property damage each year and the dangerous spread of infectious diseases transmitted from deer that have harmed both people and their pets.

In assessing these issues and searching for a solution, both state and local government wildlife biologists and environmental experts have definitively concluded that lowering the population levels of deer in these and their surrounding areas is the most effective way to address this rapidly growing crisis. After carefully exploring a variety of potential options to determine the safest and most effective way to do this, both state officials and wildlife management experts agree that controlled hunting is by far the most effective and efficient solution to reduce local deer populations to a level that could be safely supported in the environment.

That’s where UDC comes into play. UDC is comprised of conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts who cherish the environment and respect the delicate nature of its ecosystem. Our members also have a deep respect and admiration for the whitetail deer and as conservationists, understand that reducing the local deer population today is imperative to ensuring its future success tomorrow. Addressing the deer overpopulation issue is also imperative to protecting other wildlife species and their habitat, promoting public health and safety, and supporting critical wildlife management goals.

UDC helps local land and property owners, communities, developers, and government organizations address and reduce problems related to deer overpopulation issues by providing safe, effective, and humane deer management services at no charge to recipients. We do this through the use of bowhunting as an environmentally safe, sound, and effective wildlife management tool for urban deer management and control. Unlike the environmental impact, cost, and potential safety risks associated with other deer management methods which utilize conventional firearms or require large areas to safely implement, bowhunting minimizes the human environmental footprint and has proven to be the safest and most cost effective deer management tool in urban and suburban areas.

Animals that are harvested as a result of our efforts are not wasted or discarded, but rather put to good use for the benefit of those who suffer from hunger. We do this by partnering with Hunters For The Hungry and donating venison to those in need.

UDC is also active in the local community, where we work to educate the general public about the need for sound wildlife, deer, and habitat management. This includes advocating for sound wildlife management practices and tougher penalties for poachers and those who commit environmental crimes.

  • Serve local communities by providing deer management activities that support public safety and local wildlife management goals.

Conservation

  • Make a positive impact in the surrounding environments where we operate through wildlife and habitat management efforts and cooperative conservation activities.

Education

  • Educate the general public about the need for sound wildlife, deer, and habitat management.
  • Educate the general public about the role of bowhunting as a safe, sound, and effective wildlife management tool, and the safest and most cost effective deer management tool in urban and suburban areas.

Research

  • Conduct non-partisan research, studies, and informational activities to support federal, state, and local wildlife professionals and advance the field of deer, wildlife, and habitat management.

Hunger Relief

  • Combat hunger and serve the less fortunate by contributing a portion of total harvests to those in need.

Advocacy

  • Secure sound wildlife management, conservation, and environmental policies that ensure the continued role of responsible, controlled hunting in outdoor conservation and wildlife management.
  • Secure increased criminal and civil penalties for those convicted of poaching or committing environmental crimes.

Vision

Our vision is to create a healthier and more humane existence for overpopulated deer herds in urban and suburban areas to ensure the species’ long-term success while reducing the damage to people, property, and local ecosystems in a manner that positively impacts environmental habitat, other wildlife species, and people.
